The Living House Project focus on the understanding and design development for Residential housing. The plot under study sits in typical Melbourne subrubian context with rows of terrace houses. Give the conditions of a narrow plot and overshadowing by the neighbouring north building, bringing sunlight into the house beacome one of the major issues. Designing in limited space posed as much a challenge. This project, even though focusing on one plot, also covets on responding to neighbours. Having the quality of terrace housing enables the housing system to share walls. This project also reflects design response to changing environment, structuring a flexibility driven approach to design.
The living house project is called ‘Hiatus’ as it is an ensemble of interconnected spaces divided through the parameters of function. The house defines each of the space as a way to alter experiences. It tries to eliminate the need for four-walled enclosure as a means to define space, using instead, other building components as well as materiality. Small gestures have been made to break the continuity of walls to further emphasize the concept.

The Living Neighbourhood project broadens the horizon of context, looking at the whole Neighbourhood. The focus shifts onto densification and diversification, while incorporating civic and commercial spaces. The design emphasis is placed on increasing interaction among occupants by placing buildings at angles, hence creating niched pockets. When buildings face each other at angles, the periphery of vision broadens. The following is the student housing segment of the entire project to give an understanding of the concept explored in this extended project of Hiatus: Living House.
The initial idea of interaction can be achieved by bringing people either out of their houses, or making their houses talk to external environment. The un-built spaces have internal platforms as well as open paved pathways to enable people to move around inside the neighbourhood. This gesture brings would likely be successful in bringing them together, thus forming a community of diverse groups. The spatial experience is further enhances by using wooden wood-board façades and green walls.
